Elk Grove High School Student Collapses, Dies Counselors Called To School POSTED: 5:10 pm PST March 4, 2005 UPDATED: 5:53 pm PST March 4, 2005 ELK GROVE, Calif. -- A student at Elk Grove High School collapsed during a physical education class at school Friday and later died. Watch Tom DuHain's Report High school senior Chris Marshall was playing basketball in the gym when he collapsed. "The student was making his way toward the hoop and simply collapsed," said school Principal Cathy Guy. "Our staff was there. (They) called 911 (and) initiated CPR, first aid, to the student immediately." Paramedics arrived within minutes, according to officials. Marshall was taken to the emergency room at Methodist Hospital, where he was declared dead. School officials made an announcement on the death, and counselors were made available to students who needed them. "Our district officials and counselors from other high schools have come to lend support to make sure that our students have someone to talk to if need be," Guy said. Marshall's cause of death had not been released as of Friday evening. Marshall, 18, was an outstanding athlete and student, according to officials. He was on the varsity basketball team and had a grade point average of 4.0.
