Elk Grove Historic District To Get Boost From $4.3 Million Project POSTED: 11:42 am PDT April 25, 2005 UPDATED: 1:00 pm PDT April 25, 2005 ELK GROVE, Calif. -- Elk Grove is one of the fastest growing cities in California. And as new homes continue to sprout up, the city is focusing on preserving its past. The Elk Grove officials are starting a project to make its historic area more welcoming to visitors. See video here Ginger and David Simpson say they have lived in Elk Grove for more than 30 years and seen a lot of changes. "When we moved to town they had 3,000 people. Now, it's up to 110,000 people, and they seem to all want to take Elk Grove Boulevard," David Simpson said. The city has started a $4.3 million revitalization project that will answer some of the residents' and businesses' biggest concerns. "There's a lot of traffic here, and people don't want to come to this area because of safety. They don't feel safe about crossing the street. That's hurting us," said Elk Grove cafe owner Braulio Torres. The new plans include a center turn lane, traffic calming devices and more trees. "We'll be doing streetscape lighting, utilities, sidewalks, streets, brick-pavers landscaping," said city of Elk Grove spokesman Reid Montgomery. "I'm hoping it's going to look as good as they say it's going to look, and I hope it slows down the traffic," said Elk Grove resident Ginger Simpson.
