Elk Grove Neighborhood Targeted with Racist Graffiti

Elk Grove Neighborhood Targeted with Racist Graffiti: "Elk Grove Neighborhood Targeted with Racist Graffiti Neighbors in an east Elk Grove neighborhood awoke Monday to find someone had spray painted racist words and symbols on fences and a garage door overnight. The home with the defamatory words on its garage door was the only one targeted on Chicory Field Way. The family living there hasn't experienced anything like it in the three years since they moved from the Bay Area. 'First thing I thought, 'not again, I thought those days were over with,'' said Dallas Tillman. In the same neighborhood, homes on Arbon Court, Grameer Way and Conda Way had swastikas and racist terms scrawled on their fences. Tillman and his family, like those with the marked fences, worked quickly to erase the slogans and symbols. Cheryl DeBose had a message, too, for the vandals. 'We're not going anywhere,' she said. '[We're] not scared, not intimidated, not going anywhere.' Both DeBose and Tillman hope the graffiti was a case of someone with too much time on their hands, rather than a personal message of hate. The Elk Grove Police Department is investigating the graffiti. Anyone with information about the perpetrators is encouraged to call police at (916) 714-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP. Caller can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a $1,000 reward. "

Elk Grove Homeowners Wary Of Development

Elk Grove Homeowners Wary Of Development Community Meetings Planned POSTED: 4:57 pm PST March 22, 2005 UPDATED: 6:18 pm PST March 22, 2005 ELK GROVE, Calif. -- As communities expand across Northern California, one of the gambles of moving into a new home is what will happen to the open space behind your house? Some Elk Grove homeowners are not pleased about the plans for a 40-acre, open area between Bond Road and Camden Park. It's a site where high-density housing could be built. But that would be over neighbors' objections. Their biggest concern is that the development's main entrance could come off of an already very busy Bond Road. "They can't make that road any bigger than it is right now. And adding another road onto there, and if it's a high-density housing, that's a lot more cars on the road," said neighbor Kat Chappell. Some neighbors whose property backs up to the area say they were told the wetlands would remain open space. Many homeowners even installed wrought-iron fences to utilize the view. "They have to have so many acres allotted for this high-density housing. Low-income housing, I understand that. I just don't want it in my back yard," Chappell said. MORE>>

Elk Grove family mystified by ballplayer's sudden death

Elk Grove family mystified by ballplayer's sudden death Oldest brother says a recent physical exam didn't show any health problems. A day after Elk Grove High School senior Chris Marshall collapsed and died while playing basketball at school, his family was still waiting to learn how that could have happened. "We have no idea what it could have been," his eldest brother, James Cameron Marshall, said Saturday. "He seemed completely healthy. He'd just had a physical - you have to have a physical before basketball season starts - and nothing was found," Marshall said. "He was never sick or anything like that." Chris Marshall was 18, a straight-A student and captain of the school's varsity basketball team. On Friday, while playing ball during a physical education class in which he was a teacher's assistant, his brother said, he suddenly fell and couldn't get up. He was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Chris Marshall was the fourth-born of five sons. James Marshall, 24, said his little brother was always sensitive, compassionate and quiet. "He had three brothers who were older than him, so he got to see a lot of things," Marshall said. "He was getting coached all his life. I remember teaching him how to share: You share things with somebody else, you get things in return." The lessons sank in. His classmates Friday were full of stories of Chris Marshall's kindness and generosity. On Saturday, a team of Elk Grove students at a robotics competition in Davis dedicated their efforts to him. "Let's say you've got a daughter. He's the guy you'd want your daughter to date," his brother said. "If you had a son, he's the guy you'd want your son to be like." Because his brother was such a good person, Marshall said that his grief is tempered by pride. "I'm ... just grateful for the opportunity to say, 'that was my brother,' " he said. He said the family is expecting results from an autopsy within the next few days.
